Where did that turkey come from?

By Elaine Wu

Thanksgiving is an American holiday where families and friends get together to have a feast and express gratitude.
Thanksgiving dates back to 1621, when pilgrims had their first feast referred to “The First Thanksgiving. Americans never repeated the first grand Thanksgiving feast so the Americans called it a tradition. The Pilgrims held the first delicious feast at
Plymouth, Massachusetts. The pilgrims decided to have a feast because their first harvest was successful and abundant. The pilgrims shared food with the Native Americans because they had taught the colonists to plant crops and survived the harsh winter. Without food during the harsh winter of 1620 is devastating because food keeps everyone’s tummy warm. People who love food will be excited for Thanksgiving because there are variety of delicious food on the table. Without the Native Americans, the pilgrims may not have survived the harsh winter and not been able to celebrate their first harvest of plentiful crops in the New World. The feast went on for three days and it included 90 Indians. According to All about History.org, Abraham Lincoln passed the proclamation of Thanksgiving on 1863; making the last Thursday of November will be the day to celebrate Thanksgiving.
The pilgrims had enough food to last the feast for three days. The food included ducks, geese, venison, fish, lobsters, clams, swans, berries, dried fruits, pumpkins and whole lot of vegetables. Pilgrims and Native Americans ate meat more because they were considered meat eaters that time. When I saw the variety of food they ate, I began to crave for seafood and I wish I could be there…yum! There was no bread since there was a diminishing supply of flour. According to the Society for the Confluence of Festival in
India, Turkey was any type of fowl that the pilgrims had hunted. The pilgrims have cooked the turkey on their first feast. This brought us the tradition of having the delicious turkey on our table on every Thanksgiving. When I saw the turkey coming out of the oven, my mouth starts to become water! I cannot wait for that turkey to go into my tummy because it looked so delicious. The turkey was well-roasted, crispy, and such aroma made me want to eat the whole thing myself. No one can resist the smell of the turkey when it is cooking. The rich bolded flavor coming after you makes everyone drool. The common foods on our table during Thanksgiving were turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, yams, sweet potato, and pies. We are thankful to have those delicious foods coming from the kitchen.

Before the Thanksgiving meals, Americans would go watch Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. According to New York City Vacation Packages, the first Macy’s Thanksgiving parade occurred on 1924. The original name of the parade was considered as “Macy’s Christmas day parade.” The parade has a lot of balloons of cartoons and singers that Americans admired and loved. The parade evoked cheerfulness, and fun for all ages to see. I remember watching on television the crowd of people who showed up at Herald Square was insane. Little kids screaming because they see their favorite characters march pass them. When I was young I always wanted to go to this parade because my favorite cartoons were marching. I still get excited and jumpy when I see Mickey Mouse and his friends. Mickey Mouse brings joy and laughter to kids through adventures he goes on. Mickey Mouse flew across Macy’s during the 1930’s. We can still see Mickey Mouse is an important character in the eyes of Americans because it has went on for more than 79 years. People would go see the parade with their family and the kids will be amazed at the 500 pound balloon.
Well, we cannot forget that Thanksgiving is all about giving help to the poor, the elders and the homeless people. This holiday is for people to express their gratitude and give thanks for their wonderful harvest. This tradition has went on for many centuries and it is a very important American holiday.
