Being an uncle again By Ethan Rosenberg On Saturday, August 15, 2009
at 12:27 PM, Julia Leigh Goldstein arrived. How can I possibly express the joy
I felt when Julia finally came into this world? Although I’ve been an uncle
twice before, this was a little different. I am older and I understand more
about pregnancies and babies. When my family and I received the call that my
sister, Emilie, finally did give birth after being in labor for twelve hours, I
was so ecstatic. Both mother and baby were in perfect health, and I couldn’t
wait to see them.
Since she was due in August, we had awaited her going into labor. On that very Saturday, my parents and I were headed to the beach. A phone call on the way to the beach informed us about Emilie. My mother had called Emilie’s house to check up on her, and the baby sitter Emilie had hired, Leontine. “Emilie and Leon headed to the hospital. Emilie went into labor earlier this morning,” said Leontine. Realizing that I was becoming an uncle for the third time had drawn excitement in me. I remember when I was the first one to witness Bethany, the first born, take her first steps at my house. I was intensely surprised and excited. We decided to go to the beach for a little while, and just wait until we received the phone call for the delivery. After receiving the call, I was so excited; I actually called my friends to let them know Julia was born. My parents and I went into the car, and drove away. Within an hour, we arrived at Centrastate hospital in Freehold, New Jersey. Excitedly, we arrived at the information desk. We had made a request to the orderly for the whereabouts of Emilie, and what room she was in. “Emilie Goldstein is in room 231. Congratulations on the new baby”. “Thanks,” we replied. We took the elevator up to the floor of the room she was in. The nurse led the way to the room in the maternity ward. When we knocked on the door, the nurse opened up the door. “Right this way,” said the nurse “Congratulations!” The nurse exclaimed with relish. As we entered the room, we saw family and friends. We all greeted each other with great passion and excitement. Emilie’s two other kids, Bethany and Benjamin were there. There was Emilie in the bed, with a nice smile on her face, and of course that tag around her wrist. We gave her a kiss hello. “How do you feel?” I had asked. “I feel fine and I am very happy,” replied Emilie. Bethany and Benjamin lit up when they saw my parents and me, or shall I say their grandparents and uncle, and ran to give me a hug. I greeted my niece and nephew with a big hello, and then they just went back to the end of the room and colored. I didn’t see the baby yet and I was looking around the room. “Is the baby in the nursery?” I had asked Emilie “No, she’s right there toasting” Emilie humorously replied. As I look over to where she pointed I see an incubator with a cute newborn baby, Julia Leigh Goldstein. As I went and looked, there she was resting, and warming up in the incubator with a diaper on, and the umbilical chord clip attached to her navel. I was so overcome with joy and love. “Aw, Emilie, she’s beautiful,” I said when I saw her. “Thank You,” replied Emilie all happy and excited. I began snapping photos with my camera. They all came out great. The first one I took was of Julia in the incubator. Thereafter, the nurse came in, took the baby out of the incubator and wrapped her up. She wrapped her up in that nice blanket, and put a little hat on her. It was the cutest thing ever. The obstetrician walked in. “Okay people, make way, it’s time for Emilie to go to the recovery room,” said the obstetrician. As we left to the maternity ward, and walked down the hall into the recovery section, we sat down in the waiting room, waiting for Emilie to come through those doors, so we can go into the recovery room. There in that room for Emilie and Leon laid a fancy bed and chair for their own comfort. The food menu actually said “5 Star Room Service” When we saw that, we laughed. “So, Emilie. How did you feel when you first saw the baby?” I had asked her. “Oh, I was completely overjoyed that we have a new addition to the family, with whom we can share our life with”. Before this all happened, 6 months ago, to be exact, Emilie called around the end of Regents week in February to tell the news. I was with my friend, Leo at the time. We had been coming up from the basement where we were playing music. My mother was standing there all happy. “Ethan, guess what?” my mother asked “What?” I replied “Emilie’s having another baby” Excited, I jumped up, with Joy and Leo began to chuckle a little bit. Within 2 weeks, we had visited Emilie and Leon and went to Applebees for dinner. We were congratulating them and having fun talking amongst each other. “So Emilie, how did you feel when you first found out you were pregnant again?” I had asked “I was elated! Excited and Ecstatic. We had been hoping for another baby,” she replied. Throughout the next 6 months, Leon’s grandmother, whose name was Julia, died. My family and I are Jewish. In the Jewish religion, if a close relative of yours passes away while you’re expecting a baby; it is a tradition to name your child after that relative. Emilie and Leon had said that if it is a girl, then they will name it Julia. “Did it matter to you if you had a boy or girl?” I asked Emilie. “It was indifferent to us. It didn’t matter to Leon and me one bit. As long as we were having a nice and healthy baby,” replied Emilie. I had been hoping that they had a girl, because I have always wanted to be related to someone with a pretty name such as Julia. I also had been hoping for a girl, because they already had one girl, and one boy, so why not another girl. Girls are also very easy going. When we received the news from Emilie that she and Leon had been expecting a girl, I had so much joy in me and I was so happy. “How did you and Leon feel when you found out you were having a girl?” I had asked Emilie. “We were very excited. We already have a boy and a girl, and now another little girl in our lives to love and nurture,” replied Emilie. Before Emilie became pregnant, she and Leon had decided to redo the whole upstairs of their house for more room. They had decided to add an extra room, because they were attempting to have another baby. “How did you prepare for having another baby?” I asked Emilie “Well, I was home with the kids most of the time; we had already been redoing the upstairs, before I became pregnant, because we needed more room. I went to the doctor as usual, to get a monthly checkup,” replied Emilie. “Ha, wow! Speaking of the kids, how did they react when you told them you were having another baby?” I had asked. “Well we went to them and said ‘We’re having another baby,’ they were excited. Bethany was most, because Ben was excited, but didn’t understand completely what I was talking about. He didn’t understand how there was a baby in mommy’s tummy,” Emilie replied. After Emilie had the baby, family started coming closer together. Everything was also calm; we were all laid back and relaxed. Emilie having the baby was something she was very much looking forward to. She said that throughout the pregnancy, she felt absolutely fine, and was awaiting the arrival of their new baby girl, Julia Leigh.
