PSAT could provide
scholarships
By
Elaine Wu
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is a way for students to earn money for college through the
National Merit Scholarship program.
The PSAT contains
math, verbal, writing and grammar reasoning components. This exam tests students'
logic and reasoning rather than content.
The PSAT has a different grading system. If a student gets the
question right, they would receive one point. If the student answers the
question wrong, one quarter of a point is deducted. If the student decides
to omit the question, no points are taken off. After adding up the all
scores from three sections they multiply by 10 to get a students final
score. The full score of each section of the test is eighty.
Ms. Georganne Karvunis, sophomore English teacher
explained that if a student
is a junior and scores well they can get a merit scholarship.
The National Merit scholarship program has three rounds, the
semi-finalist, finalist and the winners. According to Nationalmerit.org, a
winner can get up to $2,500 scholarship from this program. Merit
Scholarship awards are supported by some 500 independent sponsors and by
National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s (NMSC) own funds. If a student
gets a scholarship from NMSC they should put it on their college
application.
“In order for a student to get a scholarship on the PSAT’s they would
have to practice the style of question given on the test,” said Ms.
Mednick, college advisor.
According to David M. Herszenhorn, a journalist from the New York
Times said the PSAT is a free exam to all sophomores and juniors. The PSAT
is free because Mayor Mike Bloomberg pays for the test. Mayor Bloomberg
wants to encourage more students to take the test and to start thinking
about college. New York City
will pay the College Board $1.2 million per year for sophomores and
juniors to take this test.
“This is the third year that the PSAT’s is free; before that students
had to pay,” said Ms. Karvunis.
The scores from the PSAT do not affect a person’s academic grade but
it helps to see their logic and reasoning. The PSAT help the colleges
understand what would a student score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
“The average score in our school is about 1200 and nationally the
average score is about 1400,” said Karvunis.
“Last year, the average score for eleventh graders was about 47 in
Reading, 49 in Mathematics, and 46 in Writing Skills,” added Mednick.
