Mind the Gap program offered at HSTAT

By Alex Khanimov

To Mind the Gap, or not to mind the gap, that is the question.

Mind the Gap is a Program that involves seven selected high school students, and seven selected elders aged 65 and older. Then they are paired off so that every teenager has an elder to work with.

The goal is to collaborate as a team and use different aspects of the young and old points of view to create a play. Now this after-school program comes to High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology (HSTAT) giving any seven students who try out a chance to learn a lot of one-on-one play writing skills from professionals themselves.

The program takes place from October to march and the workshops are every Tuesday from five to seven p.m. at the New York Theater Workshop. Alex Lewin is the lead workshop play writer that conducts every discussion.

“Our goal is to close this so called “gap” between these age groups and help them realize that there is more in common between these two age groups than most people know. Whoever joins will undoubtedly learn something new about theater, even if they were a professional… no matter what.” said Lewin.

The students who attend the program find it to be a fun after school activity. It only takes place once a week, for 2 hour sessions. And for 2 days on the last week.

“I love the program. I am heard by people who actually care about the work I put in. It’s definitely something I would like to do all year,” said Rani Albahri, HSTAT senior and Mind The Gap participant.
