Yellow Jackets' next season promising By Troy Johnson
The coach and players of the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology Boys Varsity basketball team feel that this season will be a good one and expect to do much better than last season. In the 2008-2009 season HSTAT had a record of 12-2. The players believe that with a bit more practice and heart they can improve their record and possibly lead their division. Following tryouts taking place during Oct 22-Oct 26 Coach Weil, will have some new players to add to his roster. Coach Weil stated that he expects tryouts to be very productive and that he may see some very useful players. “Some students have the potential to be great players but just don’t realize it and that is one of the things I am looking for,” said Coach Weil when asked about new player potential. After tryouts Coach Weil had this to say “I have found many good players and they will likely make a large contribution to the team.” “We learned to have much tighter teamwork and we are now more like a family than a basketball team. This will likely be carried onto the court when we play,” stated Lucas Diaz, guard and student at HSTAT. The players agree that playing with each other has tightened their bond with and they feel like they will play better. One thing that Coach Weil emphasized is that he has decided to make practice significantly more rigorous than last year. “I don’t want to see a single dry shirt during practice. If you are not sweating then you are not playing as hard as you can.” Said by Coach Weil. Last season Telecommunication tied for 1st place in the Brooklyn A south division at 12-2. the team made it to the quarter finals where they had to face Curtis High School. The lead scorers were Gregory Briggs and Joshua Rivera with a combined total of 33 points. The team did not win the game losing by 6 points. “ We played a hard fought game but I guess in the end, they played better than we did that day” said by Stan Simmons , Guard/forward and student at Tele. The team hopes that with their experience and cooperativeness that they can win the Championship. |
