Caroline Reddick, a former musical theater teacher at The High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology (HSTAT) recently returned to invite students to participate in a new theater program which will give students the opportunity to experience on and off-Broadway shows.

The program was offered to Mr. De Martini, Assistant Principal of English, Music and Physical Education, who welcomed the opportunity.

"I think any program that gives students the opportunity to experience the theater is an excellent one.  It's especially good when the plays coincide so well with what students are learning in English and history," said De Martini.

According to Ms. Reddick, “The program will allow students to learn the real roles in theater, and will open new doors for them.”

The theater workshops began on November 25, and Ms. Rhoades' and Mr. Crowley's eleventh grade classes were invited to see the play "Aftermath."  A few days later, teaching artists visited those classes to discuss the play. with the first matinee showing of "Aftermath."

In December, Ms. Boulay's twelfth grade English class attended a matinee performance of "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter". Later in the spring of 2010, students will also see "Top Secret" and "Restoration", two new plays.

Learning about the themes and issues in some of the plays and the techniques that are used in in creating plays are just some of the goals of this program. Students will also be given a chance to meet some of the playwrights and actors in some one-on-one time, and learn and discuss what theater is in general,  and what it takes to work and direct in the business.

When asked how she felt about returning to the school for the first time in three years, she responded "I am absolutely ecstatic to return to the school, and see some old faces, and hopefully meet some new ones as well”.

Mrs. Reddick said she loves the school, and coming back is almost first priority to her. “I hope the new program will be a success as it has in the past with other schools it was featured in,” said Reddick.
