HSTAT joins forces with Pupilpath The High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology (HSTAT) launched its first ever real-time classroom information system. When HSTAT students started their new school year, they were not only welcomed by new teachers but students were also introduced to Pupilpath, a privately-operated online website that allows students and their parents to access school-related information. The features of Pupilpath will permit parents and students of HSTAT to gain online access to student transcripts, graduation eligibility reports, program schedules and daily course attendance. Through Pupilpath, parents and students are also presented with a constantly-updated log of individual grades for homework and class work assignments as well as daily attendance for each class. “The main purpose of this tool is to provide parents as well as students with timely information regarding their academic progress both in class and toward graduation,” explained Stephanie Ring, who is a math teacher and Data Specialist. “Pupilpath is a way of monitoring a student’s academic progress. It will provide students and parents with the advantage of finding out earlier if a particular subject requires extra attention before the distribution of report cards,” stated Ring. “If parents see that their child is finding a certain class difficult, they will have the opportunity to make early arrangements to fix that problem.” Ring believed that Pupilpath can generate improvements in students’ academic performance, but “it ultimately depends on the students themselves whether they want to do the work or not.” Michelle Perez, a current senior of HSTAT, described Pupilpath as both “a student’s personal-online secretary” and “a useful website because in case students were absent or forgot to copy down the homework, the assignment will always be posted up on Pupilpath.” “Because Pupilpath tells me whether or not I am missing any assignments, I almost never miss any homework anymore,” added Perez. “Even if I did, I do not have to ask the teacher anymore. Pupilpath has made it so convenient for me to just check and complete the homeworks I missed.” The website not only tells of students’ homework and class work history, but it also “provides [students] with an estimated range of where [their] grades for each class falls.” According to Perez, the Pupilpath website “is not complicated at all and is very straight forward to use.” “We hope the website is easy to use,” said Ring, “however, the feedback that we have received from students and parents does seem to indicate that the website is easy to navigate.” All parents and students of HSTAT have access to the Pupilpath website. However, they must first obtain a registration code from either through the school or mail in order to register to become a member. |
