The Japanese Club

By Yawen Ye

This year the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology is getting a new language club. The club will be dedicated to study the Japanese language, culture and food.

“Some students wanted to study Japanese and we thought about running a class and instead decided to do a club first,” said Ms. Plant, English teacher and Japanese Club Advisor.

Despite the class being canceled some students still looked forward to the club.

“I’ve been looking forward to this club since freshman year and feel at ease while learning,” said Mona Dwedar, a sophomore and current number of the Japanese Club.

So far the Japanese club has had just two meetings. This club is new and many things still need to be settled. The club currently has 13 members. Ms.Plant asked students what their goals were during the first meeting. Most students’ goals were to study the language, learn about the Japanese culture but ideally about food and popular culture.

“In terms of language materials we got nothing. We got paper and pencils and I am planning to write a grant so we can get some funding,” said Ms.Plant.

In addition to learning about Japanese and Japanese culture in club, Ms.Plant would like to take them to the Japanese society in Manhattan to explore more about the Japanese culture.
