The Power Of Breakthrough

By Carlos Severino

“The purpose of Breakthrough is to develop leadership skills for male students,” said Mr. Carter, English teacher and Faculty Advisor of Breakthrough.

Breakthrough was first started because academically below-average students of color at HSTAT were in need of help in their classes. Carter decided to work with the members of Breakthrough because he thought he could try to set a good example to these young male students.

“I had a plan how to develop these leadership skills,” Carter said.

His plan was to help these young men and show them how to develop good leadership skills through group activities. Some group of these activities include group discussions, group activities and projects. They also go to different places so they can interact with others that are trying to do the same as the young men in Breakthrough are trying to do.

In four to five years, Carter said he sees these students in the college of their choice, helping others and being good leadership examples like he is doing with these young in this group. Also he said

“I see them in a position that exemplifies a break in the stereotype that has been used and defines them,” he said.

Omar Rios is a member of the group who has improved in his school grades and the way he acts outside of school.

“Breakthrough has done a lot for me. It made me realize how important school is for me and after joining I have improved my behavior outside of school as well as inside of school," said Rios.
