Red Cross finds solutions for people in need

By Fatima Amir

The Red Cross Club is about helping the people in need. Club members feel that it is an opportunity to get involved in the community and find ways to improve it.

The Red Cross Club is held at High School of Telecommunications Arts and Technology (HSTAT). Their meetings take place every morning at 7:15am in room 135 and also meet every Monday during ninth period.

Money raised in the Red Cross Club can help those in need. This club is also about spreading a cause of why it’s important to help others. They hold after-school events that raise money for the club.

“Our goal is to raise money for disaster relief while providing students an opportunity to volunteer and provide a service for HSTAT,” stated Mr. Crowley, a teacher at HSTAT, and also the club advisor.

“All you need for joining the club is commitment and an open schedule also you need to listen to the second period announcements for urgent meetings,” stated Nelson Nguy, the president of the Red Cross Club.

The club does serve as community service, meaning, meetings are equivalent to one hour, working at the café located in the cafeteria at HSTAT, also equivalent to one hour.  Other events like the breast cancer walk, is dependent on how long you actually participate in the event and other important events. This club also counts for Arista, and for those juniors who need community service.

“We consider our club to be a form of community service.  It is service for the school community.  I would recommend that students volunteer outside of their school lives if they are concerned about their college application.  I would recommend that students become more community involved in general,” stated Mr. Crowley

“The benefits of joining the club are you get recommendation letters, connection with teachers and students and with the real Red Cross Chapter”, stated President Nelson Nguy.

“The benefits of membership: greater involvement in the school community, basic work skills, and commitment to a greater cause.  I don't think resume burnishing is a very good benefit” stated Crowley.

“I defiantly recommend it, you’re helping the Red Cross and the people, and it’s very beneficial”, stated Daisy Pedroza, senior and Red Cross Club member.
